Expanding on the “Awareness” in “Breast Cancer Awareness Month”
October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Two facts worthy or your awareness are (1) Over 250,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer each year in the United States. (2) Shockingly, the number of deaths from breast cancer has not shown any significant improvement in the last 30 years. The National Breast Cancer Coalition points out that every day in the U.S., about 110 women die of breast cancer. Compare that to 1991 when that number was about 117 deaths per day and you can see that we clearly have a lot of work ahead of us to try find a cure for breast cancer.
We at Insider Pages have been spending a lot of time lately speaking with women who have survived bouts with breast cancer and are currently living cancer free. One thing that has become abundantly clear in listening to their stories is that these women ended up assembling a whole team of health providers – not just one or two doctors – to help them battle and recover from breast cancer. There are of course the oncologists, the surgeons, and radiation oncologists, but there are also a host of complementary and alternative medicine providers as well including nutritionists, massage therapists, personal trainers, acupuncture specialist, counselors, wig / hair replacement specialists and so much more. It took them a lot of time and effort to find and assemble the right health providers – at a time when they were under enormous stress and time pressure. Many told us they wished it were a lot easier to find highly rated health providers online. It’s still just too difficult.
To that end Insider Pages has partnered with Susan G. Komen for the Cure – San Francisco Bay Area Affiliate and come up with a unique way you can help raise money for the Cure without writing a check. Simply join and write a review of your favorite doctors, dentists or other health provider and we’ll donate $1 to Komen-SF. By sharing reviews of your favorite providers, you’ll be making it easier for other people like you to find great doctors online, while also raising money for Komen. The fundraiser lasts all month and you can invite your friends. Anyone who joins this fundraiser, and writes a review of their favorite family doctor, ob-gyn, pediatrician, dentist, orthodontist, surgeon, dentist, physical therapist, personal trainer or any other health care providers – will earn $1 per review for Susan G. Komen for the Cure – SF Bay Area Affiliate.
Now in previous fundraisers over the past 2 years we’ve raised over $50,000 for Susan G. Komen for the Cure. To do that here in one fundraiser would be unprecedented, but certainly amazing – and possible! The miracle of math tells me we’d need about 20,000 people to join the fundraiser and take 10 minutes to review 2 -3 doctors. That starts with you, writing a few reviews and then getting your co-worker or spouse to do the same. 10 minutes of your time could translate into thousands of dollars raised to fight Breast cancer. You’ll also be helping build a terrific resource making it easier to find great docs online.
If you’re a person who has been impacted by breast cancer in any way – personally or through friends and loved ones who battled the disease – stop and take a moment to be aware of what it has meant to you. Then spend the next 10 minutes making a difference by joining the fundraiser and spreading the word by tweeting and sharing this blog!
